Cold sores vs Canker Sores?
My friend recently was dating this guy and about a week ago they took things further and fooled around. Before this guy she was with a steady boyfriend for two years. Well she told me that she has a sore on the inside of her lip and she is scared its cold sores. She said that its towards the edge of her lip but its still on the inside. She never had a problem with cold sores before. I googled both and google says cold sores are usually on the outside, cankers on the in. She said its not painful. The guy she was seeing denies having the cold sore virus and wont admit otherise. She is going to get checked. I think it sounds more like a canker sore but she really believes its a cold sore. Any advice? What should she look for to tell a difference? Is it possible to have a cold sore on your inner lip?
The lips being the inside of her mouth, not down there.

I presume we are talking LOWER lips here? Yes, you can get the herpes virus erupting on the inside...some attacks are serious enough to be all the way up the inside of the vagina, urethra and even anal passage...

Well first of all, young men are stupid and wouldn't know a cold sore from a hole in his face, so don't take his denial as fact. You can get cold sores inside your mouth or even in your throat. However since your friend says it is painless that makes me believe it is not a cold sore.....they are usually somewhat if not very painful. If your friend is really worried she can stop by a planned parenthood and they can check it out for her.

Canker sores are usually found on the movable parts of the mouth such as the tongue or the inside lining of the lips and cheeks.
What causes cold sores?
There are two types of HSV, type I and type II. In general, type I, also known as herpes labialis, causes infections above the waist, most commonly as oral "cold sores." Type II infections occur mainly below the waist, leading to genital herpes. However, both types of HSVs are capable of infecting the skin at any location on the body.
Herpes infections, no matter where they occur first, have a tendency to recur in more or less the same place. Such recurrences may happen often (for example, once a month) or only occasionally (for example, once or twice a year).

Canker sores are identified with either white yellow sore surrounded with a reddish gray border that is painful and it is quite different than fever blisters or herpes. Technically canker sore is known Boathouse Stomatitis. They are being experienced by individuals at any age but commonly by women. It can be found inside the mouth. Usually in the tongue, cheeks, bottom of the gums, soft palate and the bottom part of the gums. They commonly grow away after one or a couple of weeks and it starts from a burning sensation followed by red area that is inflamed.
Canker sores is different from fever blisters(cold sores) or herpes for herpes are commonly occur in outside the mouth and on the facial and lip area. They are smaller than canker sores and they only occur on the non – movable tissues which are the hard palate and the gums adjacent to the teeth. There is nothing to worry about canker sores being contagious because its not.
Oral health care habit is one way of preventing bacteria that may trigger canker sore or herpes from occurring. Brush and floss your teeth regularly and by using oral health care products may aid and give relief from discomfort brought by canker sores or herpes. Using natural health care products are better for they do not contain harsh ingredients that may cause irritation especially to individuals with sensitive gums and skin.
If left untreated, canker sores and herpes may progress and lead into a more serious gum disease. Visit your dentist for for check ups and professional recommendations and proper treatments.

Unlike cold sores, canker sores appear inside the mouth. They can appear on the inside of the lips or the cheeks, the base of the gums or under the tongue. They are shallow and painful and may sometimes have a white coating. Those who are most susceptible to canker sores are women and people in their teens and twenties. Canker sores can run in families but they are not contagious. While doctors doe not know what causes these canker sores, they may be triggered by stress, bad diet, allergies to food and even menstruation.
