Flu, Cold, or Pneumonia symptoms? help?
My boyfriend is very sick. I can tell, but he won't admit it. He is coughing a hell of a lot. It hurts his chest to cough. He is having back aches. It hurts his back and chest to lay down. He has a few symptoms pneumonia. He won't go to the doctor. He is also having shortness of breath. I'm afraid something's wrong. Does anyone have a clue to what's wrong. Like, if he has a cold, the flu, or is getting pneumonia?

Your boyfriend is seriously ill. At the very least, he has symptoms of Bronchitis. The pain in his lower back is symptomatic of lower-lobe pneumonia. The pain he experiences when laying down could also indicate pleurisy(infection of the sacs in the lungs). He should see a doctor asap.

"pmc123" does not know if your boyfriend is seriously ill or not. Upper respiratory infections, particularly bronchitis, cause excessive coughing, pain from strained respiratory muscles and shortness of breath. Your boyfriend can't be diagnosed online, based on what you've posted or by some one other than an NP, PA or MD. You didn't say pneumonia symptoms you feel he has. This might have been enlightening because pneumonia symptoms can vary from one person to another.

Did he start out with what appeared to have been a simple cold or the flu. Check these symptoms online and think back. The common symptoms of pneumonia are fever (but not always), cough, shortness of breath, sweating, shaking chills, chest pain that worsens with inhalation, headache, muscle pain and fatigue. But some of these symptoms aren't exclusive to pneumonia so it can take a doctor visit and chest X-ray to make a diagnosis.

This could be just bronchitis and severe bronchitis can make you feel like you're just going to die. He should not lay prone or supine. His head should remain elevated to facilitate lung ventilation and avoid pain.

As I said, he cannot be diagnosed online, etc. Whatever his reasons for refusing medical care, they can't be more compelling than what he's going through. Pneumonia can be life-threatening. Lay that on him. And it's so treatable. But he shouldn't delay. I'll communicate directly with him if you think it will help.
