You really can't until it hits you. Ppl symptoms most often start differently, so unless you get the full body aches early or to start with, one can only wait and see just how far it's going to go.

With flu you usually have a fever and feel a lot sicker. Common symptoms include cough, body aches, chills, fever, sometimes throwing up or diarrhea, sore throat, headaches, etc.

A cold can sometimes have the same symptoms, but typically not as severe.

The only real way to know is to go to the doctor.

The flu usually starts with a cough, a bad headache, and extreme tiredness. You also get a fever and general aches and pains, and often bad chills and sweats at night. Sometimes it causes a sore throat. You can sometimes get so tired that it's hard to even get out of bed to go to the bathroom.

A cold makes you sneeze and sniffle and your nose runs and gets plugged up. However, you don't get a fever, and you don't really feel that tired.

Both infections normally clear up in a week or so, although the flu leaves you feeling a lot worse after it's gone, sometimes for 2-3 weeks. The flu is also much more likely to produce dangerous complications like pneumonia, although the great majority of flu victims recover without any problems.
