How do you tell the difference between Influenza and a bad cold?
i've been sick for a week with a thumping head, sore throat and constant running nose and coughing. Normally I get over colds quickly and get back to work asap but this one has grounded me for a while. The rest of my body is OK, I can get out of bed - so is that just a bad cold?

It sounds like a cold if you are not having any other problem. You haven't been out in the woods recently have you? Or clean a place with rodent droppings? If you have go see your Doctor.

Both are caused by different viruses. A very bad cold can not turn into influenza, but if have a cold and come into contact with some one who has the virus its possible.( more likely than not)

Muscle aches--Mild
Weakness/ Tiredness--Mild
Extreme exhaustion--Never
Runny nose--Often
Sneezing-- Often
Sore throat--Often
Cough-- Mild hacking cough

INFLUENZA::
Fever-- Usually 102 but can rise to 106 for 3-4 days
Headaches--Sudden onset and can be severe
Muscle aches--Usually and often severe
Tiredness/Weakness--last for 2 or more weeks
Extreme exhaustion-- sudden on set and can be severe
Runny nose--Sometimes
Sneezing-- sometimes
Sore throat-- Sometimes
Cough--usually can become severe
The symptoms we get during a viral illness are often the body's attempt to get rid of the virus and to minimize damage.Sneezing ejects the virus from the nose, cough from the lungs and throat, vomiting from the stomach and diarrhea from the intestines, Fever makes it difficult for the virus to reproduce.
There are over 200 different types of viruses that cause a cold.Influenza viruses occasionally cause illnesses with symptoms of the common cold, This is usually over within 7-10 days. The flu begins abruptly with a fever of 102-106, flushed faced, body aches. lack of energy some may even have dizziness or vomiting. the fevers last about 3-7 days. Can have respiratory symptoms within 2-3 days this can settle in any where in the respiratory tract producing symptoms of a cold, sore throat, bronchiolitis, ear infection, or pneumonia.
Most prominent symptoms are dry hacking cough, sore thorat and haedaches, nasal discharge and sneezing are also common. Should get better within 4-10 days except the cough this can stick around for weeks. You may need to see your health care provider for medications to help clear this all up.
