How often do newborns (5 weeks old) get pneumonia from a flu or cold?
And can it be successfully treated? Is it rare that babies die from it?

It's rare, but it happens. It's scary when a baby gets that "junky" breathing sound, but it's usually just gunk in the throat and not in the lungs. To get rid of that sound, get a nasal aspirator (bulb syringe), and some saline nose drops, have a napkin nearby. Lay the baby down at waist level with his/her head near you and the feet pointing away (upside-down). Drop 2-3 drops of saline in one side of the baby's nose, push the other side closed, and use the nasal aspirator to suction out the gunk, spraying it out onto the napkin. Do this until the nose is clear, and the baby's breathing will sound a LOT better.
Pick up the baby and comfort him/her, because there is a lot of crying involved - no baby likes this process, but it's the fastest, easiest way to get rid of that junky sound.

Pneumonia is a general term that refers to an infection of the lungs, which can be caused by a variety of microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Often pneumonia begins after an upper respiratory tract infection (an infection of the nose and throat). When this happens, symptoms of pneumonia begin after 2 or 3 days of a cold or sore throat.

Signs and Symptoms
* fever
* chills
* cough
* unusually rapid breathing
* breathing with grunting or wheezing sounds
* labored breathing that makes a child's rib muscles retract (when muscles under the rib cage or between ribs draw inward with each breath)
* vomiting
* chest pain
* abdominal pain
* decreased activity
* loss of appetite (in older kids) or poor feeding (in infants)
* in extreme cases, bluish or gray color of the lips and fingernails
