Eating right when you are sick helps your body's defenses, thus helping you to recover more quickly. However, I believe the saying "starve the flu" pertains to digestion causing and increase in body temperature, which could escalate a fever (commonly occurring with the flu). Heeding the advice in those sayings has never done me any harm!
