Your mother-in-law's co-worker would have to be coming down with swine flu to spread swine flu virus to her. Swine flu virus travels about 6 feet in the aerosol from coughs and sneezes. If your mother-in-law gives her co-worker a wide berth and washes her hands carefully, she should be relatively safe.
If your child is at high risk, you might ask your mother-in-law to stay away for a few days until it is known for sure if her co-worker will come down with swine flu. If your child has normal health and is going to school or preschool, odds are that he or she will be exposed anyway at some point.
The best thing to do is to get the H1N1 vaccine for your child as soon as it is available.
