What are the risks of the flu shot?
I just had a baby and I live where it gets really cold so a flu shot might be necessary this year. I have never had one because I hear that its possible the shot will make you sick like you have the flu for a few days and I really don't want to go through that! I've known a few people to get sick as well .. usually first timers getting the shot.. anyway.. just want some opinions and maybe share your experiences with the shot so I can make my final decision

i,ve had dozens of flu shots. i had the h1n1 shot. no issues. go to the center for disease control website for inoculation info, and discussions on inoculation effectiveness. i,ve never gotten sick from a flu shot. i,ve had polio, Tdap, pneumonia, cholera, .... i can,t even count. never had a negative reaction except for some soreness. the Tdap was an eye opener. i didn,t even know you could get whooping cough twice. i had it as a kid. horrible. i,m 63.

If you want to know the risks you can do several things... talk to a public health nurse, you physician or if you're ok with medical jargon go to the drug manufacturers website. If you live in the US and Canada you're flu shot this year is called Flulaval (made by GlaxoSmithKline) and if you google "flulaval insert 2010" you will get to a pdf file that has a list of the potential adverse reactions. Last years H1N1 has now been added as part of the trivalent (three bugs) seasonal flu vaccine this fall.

All vaccines carry a nonzero risk, but the risks of the disease they protect against are far greater than the risk of the vaccine.
The most common side effect is a little redness and soreness at the injection site. Some people get a mild fever and achy muscles for a few days. This isn't of any consequence.
Adverse reactions are very rare.
