That is easy;

Your body aches a lot more with the flu vs. a cold.

Cold: Sneezing, runny nose, head ache fever, coughing.
Flu: You feel like youve been hit by a truck and then backed over and ran over again. Your head feels like its going to explode and you have cold symptoms too. Also, you might throw up with the flu.

Common Cold: A little virus that has infected an area of your body - mainly just your nose, throat and eyes.

Flu: Something that infects your whole body, which activates your whole defense system to protect every part of your body. Unlike a cold, your whole body will feel affected - increase/decrease in body temperature, headache, dizziness, can't eat etc.

How I would determine the differences:
When you have a flu, you usually have to stay in bed because every part of your body is trying to protect you from every single foreign material your body comes in contact with, until you recover.
Most colds aren't too severe that you can't move around.
