What would cause cold/flu-like symptoms for three months?
At the end of May I got a bad cold. After two weeks with no relief I finally went to the doctors. They told me I probably had bronchitis and gave me prednisone, cough syrup with codine, and an inhaler. The prednisone messed me up... I couldn't eat and it made me go into rages. The cough syrup gave temporary relief to my sore throat, and the inhaler gave temporary relief to the scratchiness. However, when I finished the entire treatment, I was no better and even got worse. Another two weeks later I went back. They gave me azithromycin.

It's been three months and my symptoms are not going away. I have a sore throat half the time, occasionally I get a fever... as high as 102. But the worst part is the coughing. I can't stop coughing. And I'm constantly coughing up disgusting phlegm. I'm coughing so much that it's starting to cause serious muscle pain in my shoulders, upper and lower back, and sometimes abdominal region. A couple times I've gotten really bad stomach aches. These symptoms just won't go away. Every other week or so I have a day where I think I might be starting to get a little better, but then a couple days later I feel worse than I did before.

I think I need to go to the doctors again, but I don't want it to be a waste of time because they didn't do much help for me before. They assume that if I don't have a raging fever every day, there can't possibly be anything wrong. I just want to be able to breathe, not cough phlegm up every 30 seconds, literally, and not have these back and shoulder pains.

Anybody know what could be causing these symptoms that seem to be ever-lasting?

Thanks! :)

I don't know if allergies could effect your temperature, I was gonna say allergies. That's all I got.

I'm not sure what could be causing it, but maybe you should try another doctor?

I'm a teacher who is allergic to chalk dust. I have post-nasal drip as a result, which causes a cough, with phlegm, and I also have cold symptoms. I don't get a fever though.

Hi, So sorry to hear that your not feeling well :(

It does sound like chronic bronchitis to me. I work in a pharmacy and have had patients come in with like symptoms at times. It can last a long time. I had the same thing last summer, mine lasted about 6 weeks.

No cough syrup worked for me either. The best thing that worked for my cough was hot tea w/honey, lots of honey. I am not a coffee or tea drinker, but the honey really depresses the cough.

The azithromycin also referred to as a Z-Pak, is excellent I totally believe in this stuff. You may need a another dose and a higher mg, to help you again. Inhaler too is good.

Please try again and see your doctor, just be very aggressive. You may also want to see a lung specialist and have a chest x-ray too.

Also the pain your feeling is of course from all the coughing, try soaking in a warm bath with epson salt.

Good Luck...
and please give the hot tea & honey a try, and drink lots of it.
