Does exercising make things better or worse if you have a cold/flu?
Sometimes when I workout at the gym when I'm feeling sick, I feel much better afterwards and other times I feel more sick and dehydrated from exercise. Does it help you get over a cold or flu more quickly, or is it better to just rest at home?

Rest. Your body is already taxed from the illness, there's no reason to exhaust it more. Being sick is also usually dehydrating on its own, so again, it seems silly to push it even further.

I would say that the flu is a definite no no for working out. If you have a cold, taking a nice power walk or doing the elliptical might be good for you. I agree with you. You just MUST listen to your body. The question is: what do you feel like doing?

It depends on how you're feeling (stuffy nose, throwing up, sore throat, etc.). If it's minor congestion and your body isn't achy, it's safe to exercise through a cold. If you're throwing up and achy, definitely stay at home and rest. Always listen to your body, stop if you don't feel good, and make sure you stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
Also, keep in mind that if you're going to the gym with a cold, you have the possibility of spreading your germs to other gym-goers, so make sure you sanitize your equipment afterwards.

You shouldn't exercise when you're sick. Your body needs to fight off infection and exercising makes it worse (and makes you feel worse). Rest is what you and your body need when it's defenses are down.
