What's a good way to suppress the symptoms of a cold?
One of the complaints of traditional medicine from holistic medicine is that it doesn't treat the disease--just suppresses the symptoms.
Well, sometimes suppressing the symptoms is very good. However, I know that most of the dayquil/contac/etc/etc are filled with all kinds of nasties I don't want to put into my system.
Any ideas?

Great question!!
First, let me qualify my answer. I always opt for a natural or homeopathic treatment first, but I don't discount traditional medicine either.
As far as a suppression of common cold symptoms, I've never found a good natural method. I've tried the zinc, and echinacea, etc., but I'm not convinced they even shortened my cold, let alone suppressed a symptom. But that's just me.
There have been studies citing mega doses of vitamin C as something that can blast your cold out, symptoms and all. My brother-in-law uses C and this works for him.
As for me, I too do not like taking any of those liquid medicines. God only knows what's in them. My best suppression method is not natural, but it is one I'll always use: Afrin spray. It gets rid of my stuffiness immediately and lasts 12 hours. Three days of Afrin 2x a day, and I'm through the cold without ever having the nasty symptoms. Some may not agree, but it works for me.
I'd be interested to read anyone else's responses....I'd love to know about a natural method to eliminate the stuffy head.

Zicam really worked for me the nasal gel swabs. Wow do they work! I'm not a big fan of natural/alternative things but they really did work for me. I also drink a lot of ginger tea, just buy some ginger at the store, slice it up and put it in a pot of bolling water strain it and drink it like a tea, it's not the best tasting thing, but you'll get used to it...lol you'll maybe even start liking it like me. The stuff I tried in the past didn't work like airborne even though it has zinc in it like Zicam. I'm not sure why Zicam worked but airborne didn't. I actually discovered Zicam a few months ago and I can't wait to get a cold because I know it will be gone fast. There are some web pages and people saying not to use zicam because you'll loose you sense of smell and taste...hmmmm? I never did but just wanted to let you know what other people have said about it. You can buy Zicam in rapid melts, nasal swabs, nose spray, and oral mist.

I make a tea using:
Rose hips (tons of vitamin c and a bunch of other good stuff)
Mint (pain reliever, antihistamine, helps clear stuffy noses, helps sore throats)
Ginger (tons of vitamins and minerals, antibacterial, helps settle stomach)
Honey (antibacterial)
If you grow the plants and use them fresh they have more vitamins. Plus the tea is yummy. Be careful about mega doses of vitamin c. The newest research shows that it can temporarily weaken your immune system when you first start taking it or up the dose.
To prevent illness, don't touch your face unless you just washed your hands. Since I've been doing that I only get sick once a year or sometimes not at all.

I find white sage (in a tea or a couple leaves in soup) is a great way to decrease mucus production. Also helps ease inflammation of the sinuses & soothes a sore throat.
Cinnamon also helps clear a stuffy nose.
Echinacea is a great immune system booster! I drink a few cups of echinacea tea just as I'm feeling a cold coming on (a couple times a day for about 4 days) & it GREATLY reduces the severity & duration of my colds.
And of course the age old secrets, chicken soup & vitamin C! Chicken soup alone can help clear the sinuses (hot steam) & sooth the throat (hot & salty).
