Can Nitrofurantoin mono/mac be used to treat colds/flu like symptoms?
i am coming down with a terrible cold and this week is the worst week for this to happen ever! i have some Nitrofurantoin mono/mac that was just presecribed to me a few weeks ago when a doctors suspected i had a UTI, however, it turned out that i didn't. i am wondering if this medication would treat cold-like symptoms the same as an antibiotic would. i also have some levaquin that is expired by one year?

No, no, no on so many counts...
Nitrofurantoin is a urinary antiseptic and will do nothing for respiratory infections.
A cold is a virus, and antibiotics don't work on viruses AT ALL.
And you should never take "leftover" antibiotics when they are not prescribed because they just kill off weaker bacteria, leaving the stronger ones to multiply and cause superinfections. Or, the antibiotic may be for the wrong bacteria.
Please use antibiotics correctly or not at all-- but I do give you lots of credit for asking first! Good thinking.
Best wishes.
