How do I tell the difference between having a cold or having the flu?

If you have a cold, you are bunged up and are coughing but can still walk around and go to work.
If you have flu, you only want to stay in bed. If someone rang you up to say they had a £50 note waiting for you, you would not care that you couldn't go and get it.

a cold is generally sniffling and sneezing and lasts a few days. the true flu will knock you on your butt for a week or so. colds can many times lead to a sinus infection which makes you feel worse than a regular cold.

one sure fire way: Take your temperature. a flu will give you a fever. a cold will not.

There is no difference between the cold and flu. It is just a label. Most upper respiratory tract infections are due to viruses but sometimes one can have secondary bacterial infections and need antibiotics

Doctor will usually do a swab of your nasal passage and do a rapid influenza which takes about 10 minutes. The terms cold and flu vary by geography. Flu symptoms come on all of the sudden and make you feel like you were hit by a bus. Doctor i work for will swab if coughing, sore throat and fever of 100-103 present. Also might experience, H/A, ear pain, chest tightness, SOB, wheezing, body aches. Usually test for both type A and B, A is more common. Diagnosis within onset of 24-72 hours and they'll prescribe antiviral like tamiflu which will lessen the severity of symptoms and duration.
