Pediatrician reccomended giving our 7 month old Benadryl while he is on Amoxicillian the day of his flu shot?
We took our 7 month old son to the pediatrician yesterday to get his flu shot booster. While there I asked them to check his ears b/c he recently started pulling at them (just a little bit but since we were there I wanted to ger them checked) Dr. confirmed he has an ear infection and perscribed Amoxicilin (sp?). Okay thats fine my son was on it once b4 for an ear infection at 6 months.
I asked what could be the cause of him having 2 ear infections already. I was told congestion (like a cold) plays a part and my son does have a little cough & is congested. I asked is there anything I can do to help relieve the congestion and I was told give him 1/2 tsp of Benadryl.I asked "even though he will be on Amoxicilin for 10 days" they said "yes but be careful it will knock him out" I'm like uhhhh well since u put it like that now Im nervous.
Does this sound right? I'm nervous about the Benadryl. My sons father says "just give it to him" but i am worried about over medicating him. I talked to a pharmacist about Benadryl & they said it's not reccomended for kids under 1.
My son goes to daycare and I think that's why he sometimes get a cold & cough which leads to the ear infection. I hate to give him such a powerful medicine when he is so young?!?!

I'm no doctor, but that sounds like a lot of stuff running around your poor baby's system. Benadryl, vaccine, antibiotics. My son was just getting over strep & had amoxicilin when it was time for his shots too, and I asked them to wait until he was healthy and they were more than happy to oblige. I waited a week and a half before taking him in for his shot. I didn't want so much happening to my baby all at once.
Benadryl's really not a huge deal though and she only meant that it will make him sleepy. Benadryl does that, the side effect is drowsiness.
Remember you are the mom. You don't have to do everything that is recommended to you by your health care provider, you do your own research and come to your own informed decision about what happens to your own baby. Get another doctor's opinion if you need to.

Benadryl has never been given to any of my kids( 6) for congestion, only an allergic reaction to something,I'm not even sure it's for that. I always use claritin or zyrtec ( older kids), never Benadryl.
Also for a baby this young I would use a cool mist humidifier, saline drops and a bulb syringe.
My last 3 are always congested in their noses, the more I used the saline, the more easier they breathe, if you look up the nose, you will see ( I forgot what they are called). a ball looking thing in each nostril, when they are swollen the baby gets stuffy. When I would saline them and after a while I was given flonase, the would shrink and my kids wouldn't be stuffy anymore.
I think she told you Benadryl for sleep reasons only since he's so miserable. I may be wrong, but even while working in a pharmacy for 5 years( we would fill rx's for Dyphahydramine) , never for this .
Dyphahydramine has to be given every 6 hours to get full benefits which I was too afraid of over dosing , that's why I never used it unless for a bee sting or reaction to penicillin.
If you feel un easy, you don't have to give it to him, there are other ways to ease constant congestion, ask about flonase; my son at 6 months was using it. He is also congested and winter makes it worse, I plug in the humidifier and stock up on saline drops. Also,Benadryl could have the opposite affect, hyper ness.

Only give your kid Benadryl when you want to go out at night and don't have a babysitter. Hope this helps!

Ask a Pharamacist about the Benadryl. It was given to my son at 15 months for a spider bite but it didn't knock him out ( it only has that effect on some people)..
