Bacterial vs. viral infection.

Fever and aching joints generally mean flu.

They are both viral.

They are caused by different viruses. With a cold you usually have some combination of the coughing, head/sinus congestion, sore throat, runny nose, headache symptoms; with the flu you have those plus fever, chills, body aches.

I'd say a cold stepps over the line to being dubbed the flu when you have a fever, aching muscles, & general lethargy.

Both are caused by VIRUSES
