What makes the H1N1 virus worse than a normal cold or flu virus?

Nothing....its a money maker for the drug companies! The illness/sypmtoms are "mild to moderate" right now and people who are dying either ignored symptoms for too long w/out treatment OR were already sick w/ chronic illnesses. The CDC is hyping this b/c they think that the virus will turn into pandemic and get "stronger".....

i think the symptoms are a little worse but the main thing is that many people develope pneumonia and that is what people are dying from... not swine flu, but they are neglecting to spread that info around for some reason

I'd love to know that answer myself. I've always believed that if you have a strong, normal immune system that you will be able to fight off the flu effectively. I have gotten the flu shot 2-3 times ever and get sick each time I get it so I don't bother anymore. However, H1N1 has already killed 40+ kids this year which really frightens me. I mean, infants I can kind of see, and the same with all these kids with asthma and severe obesity, but I don't see how it can't be fatal to normal healthy FIT children. If you learn the answer, please let me know.

First of all, don't believe the conspiracy theorists. Drug companies would make more money off of the antivirals used to treat it than the vaccine. Vaccines are very low profit margin products. Most pharmaceutical companies got out of the business decades ago.
What makes a strain of influenza more virulent than another isn't always known. What made the 1918 flu worse is it could infect other kinds of cells most flu viruses can't.
People are scared because the media is run by idiots and jackasses. When this strain first appeared, it seemed to be killing healthy people left and right. As it turns out, Mexico's reporting system wasn't very accurate, but the story had already launched and the media won't let it die, reality be damned.
This strain does affect different age groups that then normal seasonal flus. Instead of the elderly it hits children. It is worse than your average flu, but it isn't pandemic level.
