Cold weather and rain can cause a person to get a cold or flu?
I am doing a science project on science misconceptions. One of the misconceptions is: Cold weather and rain can cause a person to get a cold or flu. I am suppost to show how this can be true and how this can not be true. What are some reasons why people would think that this is true and not true?

To simply say 'cold weather and/or cold rain can make someone sick' --no.

BUT, I have experienced being outside, under-dressed for the conditions, and then getting sick. Because...

**I believe while your body is working to keep you warmer, your immune system is lowered, and that can make you more susceptible to viruses that are around you, like the flu/cold etc.

Or, if you already came in contact with a virus, while your body is keeping you extra warm (because you are in the cold rain with little clothes on), your immune system is lowered, then you have a greater chance of the virus turning into something.

Had you been properly clothed, and your immune system at a healthy stable condition, then your chances of fighting the virus and not even feeling its affects, are greater.

Good luck.

they think its tru because people tend to get sick more often in the winter-

but that may be because everything is closed up and teh air isn't cirtcualtign-trapping germs in

this a true believe cause statistically the cold and flu is more in such a weather but in indirect way when u are in worm weather and get out for colder one the mucosal lining of the respiratory tract cannot get acustomed easily on such weathercausing it to lose some defensive charcters and even got inflamed and loss of celiac movement and change in the mucos viscosity causing stagnation of it containing the micro-oraganism and re-infection and so on

To put it short....being out in the rain/cold alone won't make you sick. Like the first answer said, it 1)lowers your immunity and 2) can cause the water vapor in your lungs to condense (warm body with cold exterior) and get infected = pneumonia. There was also a study done that proved that people huddle closer together in rain/cold and are thus more likely to contract an illness through the closer contact.
