Disappointed with my OBGYN?

Disappointed with my OBGYN?
I am 32 yrs old, married and 20 weeks pregnant with my 1st child! Both of us work and we have great medical insurance. However, I am very disappointed with the Doctor that I chose for prenatal care, etc. The sad part is, this is a well known, world recognized hospital that I go to for my care.

First, they act like everyone should know what to do. I wish there was a place locally that specialized to 1st time moms-we don't know everything!

When I go to my appointments, I am there for 3 hours at best and the crazy part is, there are rarely any other patients there! I intentionally set my appointmentrs for the end of the day, figuring they'd be in a rush to get home so my appointments wouldn't take so long!

At 8 weeks (August) I complained that I had a slight odor and my urination was "funny". The doctor dismissed it and said since I just had my annual pap smear in June (done at my regular GYN who does not deliver babies), that there was nothing wrong since my pap in June came back normal. He requested the records from my GYN doctor. At my 12 week appt, I still had same symptoms, and had to basically beg for them to do a urine culture.

A few days later, a nurse called and said I had a UTI and needed to start antibiotics immediately! A few minutes later another nurse called to break the news and I'm thinking where is the communication there? The 2nd nurse told me I had GBS (Group B Strep), which is a form of a UTI, but a little more serious bc it could be passed to baby at delivery. I'm thinking, why didn't the 1st nurse tell me I had GBS?

In October, I became very ill (touch of the flu). Vomitting, massive headache, fever and body aches, even my teeth hurt! I held out for 3 days feeling this way (scared to take anything). On the 4th day I finally called my doctor. Eveytime I call I get a nurses voicemail that says leave name, # and nature of your call. They are very good with calling back within 30 minutes...I will give them that credit. On the message I stated what my symptoms were and wanted to know what was safe to take OTC for cold/flu during pregnancy.

Nurse calls me back and says, you can take Robitussin and um...um...um.. I can't think of anything else I'm drawing a blank! WTF! My message stated why I called, don't you think she would have a list of meds before she called me back? I then aksked if I could take Robitussin with Cephlexin (that's the antibiotic they have me for GBS). She said, "you probably shouldn't" OMG! Had I not mentioned I was still taking antibiotic, I would have taken the Robitussin too! Don't you think that before she returned my call she would have pulled my chart to see I was on antibiotic? When she said that I could not take both (only after I caught it), I asked her what is more important to take Robitussin to bring fever down or continue with antibiotic? Do you know she said, "it's up to you!!!!" She suggested that if I had any more questions to call my family physician!

I am so diappointed in this care! Finally at my 16 week appt I made my feelings known and was treated like a queen. I was in and out within 45 minutes, but I am still bitter that this well known hospital provides such shitty service.

Would you switch doctors? I really want to, but most doctor's shy away from pregnant women who has already been under another doctor's care!

Am I over-reacting?

you're not over reacting. many doctors and nurses lose the ability to empathize with their patients. it sounds like you have an office full of them. maybe try looking for a new doctor while still under this doctor's care? that way you can stay with the same doctor if no others will take you. good luck!

There is no way in hell you are over reacting. you should have switched sooner! they have no business being nurses/doctors! This is YOUR baby! how can they do that?? WTF is wrong with them? im sorry that just.. omg! thats another life... i wouldnt let any of them near my baby when trying to deliver... what if the cord is wraped around the neck and they say well.. its up to you what we do.. should we remove it or leave it and not try to revive your baby.. i mean.. really? i would switch and tell you new doctor what happend and how you feel im sure they will understand.
GOOD LUCK!
and congrats!

Switch doctors. I switched my doctor at 32 weeks. I never really liked my doctor too much. I'm not really a demanding patient - but she would brush off any concerns I had and would always WASTE my time with me waiting for hours for a 15 minutes visit :)

However, the reason I switched was because my doctor decided that she was not delivering at ANOTHER hospital... instead of the one I liked. And this hospital was far from my house. That was enough reason for me to fire her.

Just find a new doctor and a new hospital there are many good one out there. google your town for good ogyns or ask your friends at work. i wouldnt care if thats a worlds known hospital or not or if it was the newest coolest one if they dont give me the right care im out of there. i think the big places stores hospital restaurant they dont really care about the quality service as the smaller ones, i believe the smaller ones try to keep their clients by good service and everything. anyway good luck to you

With my daughter (almost 6 years ago) i switched doctors at 22 weeks. It was the best decision i ever made I found an Amazing doctor i just wish i found him sooner. Now that i'm pregnant with my 2nd i planned to have the same doctor but he retired (because of health issues) and he recommend my current doctor and i really like him (no one will ever compare to my other doctor) I just so glad i didn't stick it out with the other doctor, i could only imagine how the rest of my pregnancy would have been with her. I say it you want to switch go for it, you will be surprised on how many doctors will accept you (it's a pretty common thing) I wish you the best and if you do switch doctors i hope you find a good one. =)
