Do I have the flu or something else?
First day:
I was perfectly fine until around 11 PM, when I had the first instance of diarrhea. I suffered from pretty intense chills during the night.
Second day:
The diarrhea continued every few hours throughout the day. I felt exhausted. I had a headache and my lower back ached. My appetite was nonexistent. I don't think I had chills anymore, and if I did they were much less intense. I slept earlier ~10 PM hoping that sleep would help.
Third day:
The diarrhea still continued throughout the day every few hours, but wasn't as bad as before. I had a clearer mind with only a few moments of dizziness and one instance of confusion (I had mixed up my day schedule with something else). No more lower back aching. Appetite was a little better, so I ate some BRAT foods.
Fourth day:
I just woke up and so far have gone to the toilet twice. Seems like today will be a repeat as the previous days for the diarrhea. I haven't experienced any dizziness or headaches yet, no back aches, and I can eat a little better.
I haven't been experiencing any obvious flu-like symptoms like a cough or sore throat or runny nose. I've sneezed maybe about 5 - 10 times over the past four days (about 1 - 3 each day).
Does this sound like I have the flu? If it does, why is it taking so long for the other symptoms to appear? When should the flu go away, considering my situation?
How can I stop/reduce the frequency of diarrhea? I think I'd rather be sneezing and coughing...
What are some things I should eat that would help me get rid of whatever disease this is?
I really appreciate anyone who has helpful answers. Thanks.

My husband just is getting over this and has been to the doctor twice. They said he has a gastrintestinal flu caused by a virus. Thsi is not the same as an upper respiratory flu. The symptoms are totally different so you probably wont get the sneezing, runny nose, etc. This particular strain of virus going around last anywhere from 7-10 days before going away. Just keep up the fluids. Gator aid or sports drinks are best. BRAT diet works well also. Keep away from any foods that would normally cause you to be gassy or crampy anyway. Rest up and keep up fluids and maybe throw in a multi vitamin to replace things lost from diarrhea and you should be good in just over a week.

It sounds like you have the stomach flu, which is not the same as the respiratory flu. Unfortunately, since the flu is a virus, it can't be treated with antibiotics and you just have to let it run it's course, I would say if the diarrhea persists for more than a week, and/or the other symptoms you were experiencing return, then you should see a doctor. Sometimes over the counter medications like Immodium are helpful in reducing the diarrhea, and stick to bland foods. BRAT- bananas, rice, applesauce, toast....basically anything that's not heavily seasoned and won't upset your stomach. There is nothing you can eat that will "get rid" of your illness, but you can help make the symptoms bearable until your body rids itself of the virus.
