General anaesthetic and flu symptoms after - are they related?
Or did I just have a cold coming anyway?

Yes and no. GA will take a lot out of you in addition to the trauma of the operation itself.
Most likely you won't wake up and start operating heavy machinery.
But if you had just caught a cold, I wouldn't know if the cold viruses survive or not.

Let's blame it on the stress of surgery on your body and not the anaesthetic. In fact, the anaesthesia decreases the stress (and circulating catecholamines) that surgery brings on. Stress lowers your body's resistance to infection.

You were probably exposed to a virus (maybe in the hospital - lots of sick people there) and came down with symptoms shortly thereafter.
