How do you prevent cold sores?
I get cold sores every once in a while (especially when I am stressed out) and I was wondering if there is any vitamins or certain foods that help prevent them. I know that it is herpes and you can never be completly cured. I do use Abreva once an outbreak occurs, but I want to know if they can be prevented without a perscription.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks.

Try taking a L-Lysine supplement.

A cold sore is a herpes virus. The virus is always in your system, but tends to rear it's ugly head as an outbreakwhenever your body is stressed and isn't spending as much energy to supress it.
This is just the way it is and there's nothing you can do to stop it completely, but here are some tips.

Deal with the symptoms. Learn what it feels like when one is coming on and what products treat it best when you do get an outbreak.

Get your immune system in top condition. That means eating healthfully. Get lots of fresh fruits and veg., lean meats and drink plenty of water. Limit intake of soda, sugars, corn syrup, fried and high-fat foods, fake or man made foods, which are high in salt, sugar and hydrogenated fats.

Supplements-read up on them. L-Lysine is an amino acid that is very helpful in fighting off viruses. You should take a small amount on a daily basis and lots on days you have an outbreak or feel one coming on. Zinc, vit. C, and many other help the immune system. I"m sure there's plenty of info on line about them.

Antibiotics, while great for killing off bacteria, tend to stress the body, plus if you're taking them, your immune system is probably already busy fighting off something else.

During your period your body is working extra hard too. Eat well, drink water, eat foods high in iron (fresh spinach, green veggies, red grapes, raisins) and get extra rest.

Also, if you stay healthy, the outbreaks generally get fewer in frequency over time. I wish you the best.

I had a problem with this several yrs ago. I heard that it helped to take a B-vitamin complex. Sure enough, I stopped getting them.

Hope this helps you.
