I try not to seem too puzzled by this, "What do you mean?" "Don't---I'm not worth it." "What kind of nonsense is this?" I reply with my usual catchphrase. My family and friends used to always antagonize me about it. It was a hard habit to break. It convinces me that the atmosphere is not as tense as it really is. I find a blanket and drape it over him, fussing with it for a while. "You're feverish. Delerium is your problem, I'm sure it's setting in that's why---" "No," he begs, this time clutching the bottom fabric of my sweater, "You don't understand." "You're scaring me," I whisper, trying to pull away from him. "Don't be nice to me... "Stop!" he hisses, as though he's been severely burned, "Leave me here. Let me be.. I have to go.." Now he's hysterical, and I'm trying to read answers from his eyes. "I didn't tell him...
