Is it safe to get pregnant while being sick with a cold/flu?
My partner and I have been trying to get pregnant since the 20th of December (2008). He came back with the flu from a business trip to China, and 4 days later I have gotten it too. He started taking Benadryl, then Dayquil and now Robitussin (non DM). He seems better, but now I'm the one with the stuffed/runny nose and a dried throat.
I've been taking Robitussin Cough & Cold, Halls Cough Drops, Afrin (for my nose) and been rubbing Vick's Vapor Rub on my neck, chest and back. I'm taking Robitussin (non DM) and Afrin because they were both featured on my doctor's website on what to take while pregnant.
I'm worried that if I happen to get pregnant, the baby will not successfully develop the right way in the first and most crucial days of implantation/pregnancy during the first trimester.
Has anyone had healthy pregnancies/babies while conceiving with a cold/flu and taking over the counter medicine?
Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays! :)
P.S. I've been taking my prenatal vitamins for 4 months now and I'm also taking some extra Vitamin C drops (since I've gotten the cold).
I would also like to know any other over-the-counter meds that I could take for the cold/flu (USA brands please).

Well, stop trying for 2 weeks or so, i'm sure you will still be able to try after 2 weeks.

I doubt having a cold would prevent conception, and you're doing the right thing by taking "safe" medication. One thing to consider though, is that your own immune system is pretty low at the moment, so if you DO conceive you'll be knocked around a bit in the early weeks.
If it's a cold, you should be over symptoms in 3-5 days, if it's the flu, they can last up to 2 weeks for normally healthy individuals.
I CAN tell you that each time I've been pregnant, I've had a nasty cold in the first 4-5 weeks (either because I've conceived in winter both times, or as my doc says, because immunity drops initially to allow for implantation) and both pregnancies have been fine afterwards, with normal foetal growth and development.
You'll be fine! All the best feeling like trying though... sex is the LAST thing on my mind when I'm feeling ill!
