Why was the swine flu declared a national emergency when it kills less people then the more common flu?
Its less deadly and effects less people then the normal flu... You can get over it more easily and has only killed the same people that are likely to die from the regular flu. I get that we don't have a vaccine for it but we don't have one for diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc... either, all of which have higher kill rates. Why aren't those declared national emergencies?

Because of the number of pediatric deaths. (Flu usually kills old people- H1N1 is killing kids)
They (gov't) does not know how quickly this virus is going to spread, and already the number of cases of non immunocompromised children deaths almost matchs previous years, and we are just getting started with flu season.
Local hospitals are planning what to do if they run out of ICU beds/ respirators. It's that serious.
Hospitals are mandating health care workers get flu shots in fear of the workers spreading the illness.

A lot of people are getting sick of swine flu, and it's been so sensationalized that everyone is ridiculously panicked. Declaring it a national emergency allows hospitals to move emergency rooms offsite so they can treat more patients.
Personally, I believe that this is just the government's response to a highly sensationalized disease. No one would be doing this for the regular flu, and it's not like the swine flu isn't occurring all over the world. But if the government doesn't do anything about swine flu in response to all the media attention it's getting, it would just be bad PR.

I agree. I just checked today and read about it on the CDC site. Unless you have a weakened immune system, your risk of suffering complications, and thereby death, are low. Here's an article if anyone would like death rates per age and hospitalization rates per age. It also has some information as to prevention...caring for someone who is ill...etc.

People are stupid.
They have NO IDEA that this KILLER BUG is a KILLER because it kills the SUPER HEALTHY PEOPLE.
The SUPER HEALTHY are dying because their natural immune system OVER REACTS and it sends a signal to fight the bug with FLUIDS...so much so that your lungs cannot dispel the fluids fast enough and your lungs fill up with fluids and you suffocate to death. Sometimes in a matter of hours...not days.
This is why so many HEALTHY people died in 1918 during the Spanish Flu.
People think this KILLER BUG is nothing to worry about.
Bloody FOOLS.

Truth Is........
Declaring a national emergency immediately gives federal authorities dangerous new powers that can now be enforced at gunpoint, including:
• The power to force mandatory swine flu vaccinations on the entire population.
• The power to arrest, quarantine or "involuntarily transport" anyone who refuses a swine flu vaccination.
• The power to quarantine an entire city and halt all travel in or out of that city.
• The power to enter any home or office without a search warrant and order the destruction of any belongings or structures deemed to be a threat to public health.
• The effective nullification of the Bill of Rights. Your right to due process, to being safe from government search and seizure, and to remain silent to avoid self-incrimination are all null and void under a Presidential declaration of a national emergency.
