Other than its origin, whats the difference between swine flu and the regular flu?
I've read the symptoms, and it just sounds like another case of the flu or cold. So why are people freaking out about it? I mean we don't even have cures for those, and it's been going on for millenia, it just cures with time, how is that different from the swine flu?

the only difference between swine flu and regular flu is the way it was treated by the media

Honestly there really isnt much difference. Except for that its affecting more people at once, and a lot faster. I guess in some ways it can be more serious but the symptoms are the same and tons of people die from the normal flu too. It's being treated a little overdramatically but unless your in complete contact with a pig or someone who had it, or your very young (baby toddler) or much older you aren't at a high risk of getting it. but i guess you never no. to sum it up there really isnt much different except for the amount of people it affects at a time and how quickly/easily it spreads.

Regular flu kills 36,000 people a year in the United States and estimated 375,000 worldwide, About 90 percent of those deaths are among people older than 65 who already have health problems and cause their underlying disease to decompensate and then they don't have the reserves to fight the regular virus. Peoples are worried about the new swine flu outbreak because many of those who died in Mexico have been young and otherwise healthy individual.

There is a similarity between the swine flu epidemic centered in Mexico City and the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918-19. Infants and elderly were spared. It was the young adults with robust immune systems that were the prime victims and the disease took them literally by storm. What happens with young and healthy patients is that their immune systems react so strongly that they can triggers something known as a "cytokine storm".
