really annoying cough that wont go away!!?

Im 16 yrs olf, generally good health but asthma in winter (im in italy now where its winter...)
about a week ago i got a cold (the usual, sore throat, runny nose etc). I reckon it was due to jetlag. That dissapeared after about 4 days, but now i have this cough that is pissing me off.
Most of the time I am only taking short shallow breaths because if i do anything more than that, i start to cough. I can breathe through most of my coughing fits.
I am on an exchange program in italy, and i don't have enough dosh to go to the docs, and i really dont want to! Any suggestions as to what I could do to help get rid of this cough?? Could it be asthma related?
At the moment i am not taking any meds, for my cold earlier in the week i was taking codral. right now i am just trying to take it easy, suck on ice to cool my throat, and drink lots of water.
Thanks heaps, any suggestions for what i could do to ease the cough/make it go away would be soo appreciated!

I read this somewhere on the internet (can't recall where) but I do read quite a few sites on health. Put Vicks Vapor Rub on the bottom of your feet (at bedtime I would assume) put on socks to cover and leave on till morning. I know this sounds far out, but there was something said about the bottom of the feet able to absorb and send relief through the body. Also there were quite afew references from people who have tried this and swear that it works. Good luck...I had a chronic cough when I was very young and I know how miserable that can be.
