What is the difference between The Common Cold and The Flu?

They are two different kinds of viruses with different effects. Cold is caused by a rhinovirus, and has mild symptoms like sore throat and head congestion. There are something like 80 different rhinoviruses, which is why you will get so many in your lifetime.

Influenza is caused by a different kind of virus. The symptoms are more severe - fever, aches, chest congestion, malaise. Often, when people have a "bad cold" it is really flu. There are a few strains of influenza; however, they are constantly mutating, so your immunity to a flu virus now will not carry over to next year's incarnation. Flu can be serious, and it can be deadly for people with compromised immune systems. Unfortunately, lots of bugs have "flu-like symptoms" so it can be difficult to tell influenza from even more serious illnesses.
