Because some (but not all) illnesses are species specific.
Diseases which can be passed from humans to animals or animals to humans are called zoonoses.
Human colds and flu, I think, are specific to humans.
Cats can get cat flu - many people have their cats vaccinated against it, because it can be lethal. Similarly, most horse owners have thier horses vaccinated against equine flu. I don't know about dogs.

The influenza virus is natural in birds, and attacks humans. It just doesn't affect some species. So, to answer your question, this is a species-specific ailment. And like said, cats can get a different strain of it.
