Can a cold or flu virus live and multiply in ordinary tap water or does it need bodily fluids to live?
Being that swine flu is out there now it just occured to me that if a water could be contaminated, i know that most viruses and bacteria need liquid to survive but specifically what kind of liquidscan create favorable conditions for them?

virus' aren't alive or dead, they are natures mystery. you can pick them up anywhere. you're more likely to contract a virus infection from someone else that is sick because they are bombarding you with a bunch of them all at once, making it too hard for your system to have a fighting chance. especially with an unfamiliar/new virus like the swine flu. but don't worry because you won't die if you A: are not an infant B: are not the extreme elderly and C: don't live in a third world country.

Viruses can survive outside of a host for various amounts of time. Temperature and humidity are important factors in determining how long. For Influenza viruses, it is typically about 2-8 hours.

Although the viruses can remain viable during this time, they can not replicate outside of a host. They require the nucleic acid materials and other building blocks found only within a host cell to begin replicating.

Since viruses are not really alive, they are usually described as "viable" during the time frame that they have the ability to infect a host.
