how long does a cold/virus stay alive OUTSIDE of the body?
So, it's common knowlege that a cold can be passed on by serveral means, like airborne (coughing, sneezing, etc.) or by door handles and shopping carts. But what I want to know is how long will that virus stay alive on a door handle or shopping cart until it dies off because no one else picked it up. I would assume it needs a host to stay alive. Or maybe not, you tell me... Thanks!

there are numerous "cold" viruses, called rhino viruses, and they are tough little organisms. researchers have found these viruses living on surfaces up to ten days.

Your answer needs to be more defined as to what type of cold? For example the Influenza virus can live for 5 days
Its the chain of infection as soon as the chain is broken the virus dies, the life expectancy varys depending on the virus - There must always be a casuative agent: Bacteria, Virus, Fungi, Protozoa.
- Then a Resovoir anything it can live in such as the GI tract, Mouth, or even an object like a door handle.
- Portal of Entry: a way for the agent to enter.
- Source of Transmission: how the agent gets inside the body, by air borne, direct contact, indirect contact.
- Portal of Exit: a way for the agent to exit.
- Sustainable Host: A Host that can now become infected, a human or animal
